Race Unity Day is observed worldwide by Bahá’ís and others with meetings and discussions. The day was established in 1957 by the National Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of the UnitedStates, with the purpose of focusing attention on racial prejudice. There is a long history of Bahá’ís working towards racial harmony. In 1912, `Abdu’l-Bahá, the leader of the Faith, successor to the Faith’s Founder Bahá‘u’lláh, presented at the Fourth Annual Conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) during His visit to America. He encouraged the development of conferences for Racial Unity and Race Amity. In May 1921, the Bahá’í ‘Race Amity’ movement was launched in the nation’s capital, Washington DC, as ‘a practical effort to influence public discourse on race in the United States’. This movement was distinct in that it focused primarily on eradicating the root causes of racial injustice. Bahá’ís see racism as a major barrier to peace, and teach that there must be universal recognition of the oneness of all humans to achieve peace.
