Birth of the Báb

The Báb was born on October 20, 1819, in Shiraz, Persia (now Iran), of Siyyid ‘Ali-Muhammad, who later took the title of “the Báb,” meaning “the Gate.” Bahá’ís believe that the Báb is one of the Twin Manifestations of God for this new cycle of human history. He proclaimed to be the Promised One of Islam, the Mahdi or Qá’im. His coming fulfills the spiritual return of Elijah and John the Baptist, as well as the saoshyant referred to in Zoroastrianism. The Báb was the Forerunner to Bahá’u’lláh and Herald of the Bahá’í Faith.
